So, uh, how about that Dragon Age game? (sorry, Mario)

Anyone have this yet? Looks like coop mode might be interesting!

I liked his take on video games being ablt to bring out the best/worst in people. It's quite fascinating how people can change given a fake setting to mess around in and then change from what they normally are and take on a persona of that world.

As for the game, it looks fun! I can't wait to try it with a few friends--preferrably not adversaries.

Too busy with Dragon Age. It's really really good btw. Some great voice acting and the plot is alot of fun. That Mario game looks sweet though, I'll pick it up soonish.

Aye, my roommate got Dragon age and it looks to be a good version of dungeon siege. Have fun w/ it!

Fap's picture

Too bad New SMB has no online play, only couch co-op. And it's on the wii : (

Also, dragon age has totally sucked me in. My female elf mage just defeated the demon who was controlling Arl Emon's son, and is now on a quest for the holy ashes which will cure the Arl. This game is like the ultimate DnD campaign lol.

Qyn's picture

Qyn

Oh, wait, it's not online? That's ridiculous. SSBB and MK have online play, why can't Mario?!

Ok, well, that knocks it down a bunch of notches for me.

And I've heard good stuff about Dragon Age, may try it out at some point.

N8's picture

N8

Yeah Dragon Age kinda somehow ate 75 hrs of my life since it dropped two weeks ago :/

I beat it last night but now I got to work on all the achievements...which means another play through. Good thing the government is subsidizing this activity a.k.a. unemployment. Yeah Fap it's like playing a really really good D&D campaign, wait till you get to the Deep Roads underground area, that place is huge.

Oh and also you should friend me on the 360, my gamertag is surprise: doasain

Also did you notice a major geographical feature on the world map? Why it's the Amaranthine Ocean, and the bad guy voiced by Tim Curry is the Earl of Amaranthia.

Fap's picture

Fap

lol yeah i did notice that sea. haven't got to the earl yet. This morning I was in borderlands, probably nearing my second play-through. I'm in a spot in dragon age where i have like ten or more quests; next time i start it up i'm going to be sucked in for several hours.

Fap's picture

Fap

yes, yes it is : D

i've been playing borderlands more lately b/c school requires all my long-term attention, but as soon as finals are over i'm burying myself in dragon age. i'm liking my mage (nuker = awesome), but i want to play a rogue since i seem to see locked chests all the fucking time, and my stupid party members can never unlock them.

Trumby's picture

Trumby

Agreed, Dragon Age is amazing.

Fap, you didn't take Leliana for your party? If I wasn't playing a rogue I would have her in mine. Right now I'm using Morrigan, Alistair, and Wynne. Just finished the mage tower. I think I just hit level 9.

Fap's picture

Fap

yeah i have her, and i have another dude whose a rogue (i wont do any spoilers), but it seems like every chest is unopenable. my hypothesis is that if my main were a rogue i would have a higher lockpick than they do.

my party is usually leliana, alistair, and wynne, or i swap leliana out for morrigan if i want a nuke fest. i think i'm level 10 but i can't remember.

yori's picture

yori

i had an elf warrior reaver that was like 12 but i just recently rerolled as a female mage because melee isnt really all that great...apparently rogues are alright but warriors are baaaaad...oh and also i found out you can get into some sort of romantic relationship with alistair who is like my favorite character and the best rpg npc dude ive ever seen...and hes hetro =(

i usually have alistair, leliana and sten...how did you get wynne?...she was at ostagar but like she didnt come into my party D:

Fap's picture

Fap

I think that she actually asked to come with me after the mage's tower. I can't really remember. Oh, and my female elf mage totally got laid by a hooker and a hairless sheep-like thing. it was awesome. yeah, alistair is great

Trumby's picture

Trumby

Ah, yeah, I have both of those two rogues at my disposal now. The 2nd one I believe teaches the Assassin talent. And yeah, the talent part is the problem with the other two rogues. At least with Leliana, I don't want her to be ranged and she has all those ranged skills <.< My rogue is I think 3rd tier lockpicking so I can unlock everything near my level.

As for warriors..I haven't played one yet but it does seem they are very meh. I think I'm going to do a female mage next too (my rogue is male). Already romanced Morrigan and now I'm going after Leliana, her approval is at like 45 right now. I've heard you can romance Leliana as a female too, but for Morrigan there's a mod you have to do. Same thing with Alistair, you can do some editing and be able to romance him as a male :P

Wynne is awesome because she's a healer. You get to play her during the mage tower, then she asks to join you after it.

Crazy Rambles's picture

Crazy Rambles

Yeah, I'll def have to borrow this game (Dragon Age) from my roommate. It sounds really entertaining.

All the class editing seems fun and the charaters seem well molded and fairly 3D.

yori's picture

yori

the mage im making is a healer so it works out really well...i usually just control alistair into the battle making sure he taunts and shield slams some shit and then switch to my character to heal up the party...fucking crazy tactical micro-management is my weak point so i just invest in a bunch of tactic slots and leave the ai alone...you know...ben would really like this game...i bet he never even reads these forums...

Qyn's picture

Qyn

Blah blah blah.....so Mario, lol?

I'm guessing I should DL Dragon Age. >.>

Brian's picture

Brian

Dragon Age is awesome except for the fact they want you to pay extra for the side quests.

I actually almost beat the new Mario game. I highly recommend it if you're a fan of the old mario side scrolling. Also the fact that you can have friends randomly play along side of you is a HUGE bonus.

Speaking of games, if you haven't already , you should download torchlight (illegally or legally for $20). It's basically diablo + steampunk + mods. The base of the game has 32 levels, but there is an unlimited dunegon after you beat the final boss.

Trumby's picture

Trumby

Chris, you should. It is a great game.

Janet, I think I'm going to do the same with my mage so I don't have to have Wynne in my party. Also do you have the male rogue yet? He totally wants to bone my character (who is a guy..) and I barely have any approval with him. I'm going to try to romance every party member (at least the ones you can) on my rogue. Leliana already got mad at me because she heard Morrigan and him sexy timing it up. Good thing I convinced her we were just talking though! High coercion ftw ;)

And for the DLC stuff: just buy the digital deluxe edition, all that comes with it (and it is only $49 on steam right now, until sometime tomorrow).

Fap's picture

or dl all the add-ons and special items from an illicit source, as i did : D

Mage with Arcane Warrior & Blood Magic specialties = unstoppable tank

Seriously with full plate on as a mage and all the defensive spells active nothing can hit you for more than 1 point of damage. I have no mana pool but I since I'm a blood mage I cast a few aoe spells from my health and then melee everything down.

My first guy was a rogue with backstabbing melee skills and he's a ton of fun except he doesn't last very long in combat.

My favorite parts of the game however were chatting up my companions and figuring out which gifts to give them for max potential then trying to sleep with them.

Fap's picture

Fap

where do you get those mage specialties? I've only got shapeshifter from morrigan

Trumby's picture

Trumby

You get arcane warrior from the ruins in the Brecillian forest. There's a phylactery you can interact with and a mage spirit teaches you it. I haven't got the blood mage one yet though. Spirit healer I assume you get from Wynne, but I haven't interacted with her enough to try to get it.

Fap's picture

Fap

theres a vendor that sells the codex for spirit healer, i think..

N8's picture

N8

Yeah you have to buy the Healer codex, Wynne won't teach it to you.

To be a blood mage you have to strike a deal with the demon that is controlling the Earl of Redcliff's son. You have to go to the fade and then converse with it. Also you know you can buy the tome for say Spirit Healer, read it and then reload a save before you bought it and it will be unlocked for all play throughs.

Trumby's picture

Trumby

Aw man that sucks, means I have to learn blood mage on my next playthrough then!

And yeah I saw the vendor that has the codex yesterday

Fap's picture

Fap

whoa, i didn't know that save reload trick! and i didn't know about the blood mage thing! i fucked up the character already!! at least i can still get arcane warrior..

N8's picture

N8

Same thing happened to me, I missed the Reaver spec also on the first playthrough. I got the Blood magic the 2nd time. Blood magic = teh win.

For my second playthrough I also used the gold cheat so I could buy all the expensive stuff from your camp vendor. It's very simple you just:
1. Place 1 expensive item in the junk like the Dragon armor plate
2. Try to sell the item to a vendor from the junk section and also hit sell all junk in quick succession. If you did it right you will sell the item twice and then you can just buy back the item and do it again. Even if you mess it up you can buy it back for the same price you sold it for so there is no worry. It takes a few secs of practice on the xbox you hit Y then A almost at the same time. I had like 800 gold after 10 mins.

I don't recommend this however for your 1st playthrough but for my 2nd I had more fun not worrying about being poor.

Also one more glitch but if you buy all the expensive stuff from the camp vendor as soon as you see him right after you leave Lothering he re-stocks everything once more. Which means I had two Vashelle's (the sweet 1 handed axe) and two skill-up tomes etc.

Oh and also one more piece of advise, make sure you give one of your chrs. the alchemy/herb specialization. Vendors don't restock potions always. I found myself at endgame with like 2 lyrium mana potions and sure sometimes you get lucky and get them from dead enemies but it's wiser to get someone to make them.

Fap's picture

Fap

The junk? I haven't seen this :x is the cheat workable in the pc version?

Fap's picture

Fap

So, I found another exploit/cheat/whatever in Dragon Age. When you level up, you can get infinite attribute points at the cost of one attribute. How it works is you assign your three points to whatever attribute is your throwaway (I did this to str on my mage), then hit reset. You get the three points back, but you can also tick that attribute down three points from where it was, giving you six points to spend. You can just keep assigning three points, then resetting. If you do it 50 times, you can then click your attribute down 150 points and get that many points to spend. The most interesting part is that the game only registers a zero, so you don't have a negative attribute. I feel a little bad about doing it, but now I have 60s in magic and will at level 12, which is awesome.

I still cant find the junk stack that you were talking about though, nate.

N8's picture

N8

Oh that sounds cool Fap, I'll have to check it out.

The junk is in your inventory, just go to any section and there should be a way to move the item to "junk". I believe the far right tab in inventory at least on the xbox. Perhaps the pc menu looks different?

Trumby's picture

Trumby

Ohoho interesting to know about that. Might have to make a char who is a cheating char :P

Morrigan keeps getting angry with me that Lelianna's approval is so high (even though it isn't 100 yet so she won't sleep with my guy!), kinda funny. She's a very jealous type! o.o

Also I think that this junk thing must be part of the console versions, because I don't know what he's talking about either.

*edit*

Yeah, the far right tab on PC is the "plot items" (quest stuff) tab.

Timmeh's picture

Timmeh

Does the attribute trick work in the PC version?
I'm kind of tempted to max my magic for lulz >_>

Fap's picture

Fap

it works for me and i only have the pc version.

yeah, the last tab is plot items, so i guess i don't get infinite gold, just infinite pew-pews : (

N8's picture

N8

Yep, I just lvled and couldn't get the attribute glitch to work. So it seems console = infinite gold, pc = max attributes.

Fap's picture

Fap

huh, so weird! makes you think the glitches weren't accidental. we got platform-specifics cheats instead of the usual platform-specific characters.

yori's picture

i am totally an arcane warrior/spirit healer and its the fucking dopest ever...im like a battle cleric in massive plate casting chain lightning and group healing every cooldown...also i went back to my warrior reaver because i read a bunch of shit and realized that i totally fucked him up and started slamming points into str...and now he just rips through everything...also i cant do what i wanted to do with my mage and i cant really say what i wanted to do b/c that would be a big fat spoiler...but anyway it kind of bummed me out...now i have a 19 human mage a 18 warrior reaver and im starting a human bard and i still havent beaten the fucking game yet...=(

Fap's picture

Fap

i'm thinking about starting a reaver or something. I totally messed up on my mage, having selected the shapeshifter specialization without reading any literature at all. Now I'll be a shapeshifter/arcane warrior lol.

oh, here's a decent dragon age wiki, though i'm sure everyone already has it.

This game is soo addicting. I've spent like 47 hours on just my rogue and I'm still not even at the landsmeet yet <.<

Just started a female elf mage who is going to be my evil character. Think I might do arcane warrior/blood mage on her, or maybe spirit healer instead of blood mage just so I don't have to have Wynne in my party.

N8's picture

N8

Just make Wynn and Morrigan both arcane warriors and yourself a blood mage arcane warrior. Then bring along Leiliana for any locked chests and you are good to go. I killed the high dragon with that setup and only used like 2 healing pots. Having blood magic is killer when you don't have much of a mana pool because of sustainables being active. Here's a good faq on the Arcane Warrior class:

Speaking of male sluts and Dragon Age, why have you all neglected to inform me of this:

http://videogum.com/archives/video_games/nsfw_dragons_age_originss_gay_103181.html#more

The link was sent to me from a total non-geek friend! Seriously people, you are letting me down.

Timmeh's picture

Timmeh

Dude, no one plays a male elf!
I like this game just because of the spell "Walking Bomb". Makes fights go 5x faster if you manage to get a kill in on a group of enemies hanging out together and then just bam kaboom them a few times.
I'm still only like level 6 though :[

Fap's picture

Fap

just wait for virulent walking bomb, that shit is awesome.

Timmeh's picture

Timmeh

I haven't actually bought that because everything else looks so fucking awesome so I can't wait to get my hands on all of it >_>
Is it really that great though? I don't encounter huge clusters of dudes clumped together often enough that I can imagine needing more than one or two explosions to end them.
I should clarify, by "great" I mean useful. I have no doubt that it's buttfucking awesome to behold.

Fap's picture

Fap

lol

yeah, i pretty much constantly encounter large clusters of enemies now, and rarely do they all drop in one assplosion. the chain explosion is where it's at, imo.

Timmeh's picture

Timmeh

Can it pass to someone that was killed by the first explosion and explode twice instantly? Or does it only pass to living creatures?
I'll grab it on my next level :3

Fap's picture

Fap

living creatures, but they're usually knocked down to pretty low health by the first explosion so they blow up pretty close to each other.

oh, my mage has 120 magic, 100 will, and 60 con. i'm such a cheater lol

Timmeh's picture

Timmeh

Dx
I've decided not to cheat yet. I get through most battles within seconds anyway (of real time). If I hit a point where I have to grind or something though, fuck that.

I wish there was an option to replay battles in real time after you're done with them. The 5 minutes of commands you can give out for a few seconds of fighting ought to look amazing when played through at full speed.

yori's picture

yori

uh...i totally played a male elf...that was my first character and who i ended up beating the game with...but i didnt homosex it up with the other elf...i instead banged morrigan like 15x in a row...but i did make a human templar with the intent of sexing the male elf assassin in mind...also like...this game is so fucking intricate...theres so many play styles i just cant make enough characters to do everything i want to...ive never even gone down the entropy tree...right now im working on my bard...they suck at beggining levels...or maybe its just me that sucks...i guess ill need to do some attribute hacking

My first guy and main is a male elf! He's like metrosexual n shit. Also I found Bard's kinda sucky however duelist/assassin rogues are alot of fun. Once you guys have beat it I would like to discuss some plot points with you all. There's some interesting stuff that happens right before the endgame...

we have no job/school...makes focusing on intricate rpgs so much easier...i beat it like a few days ago...with like 40+ hours of playtime...but like i didnt do a whole lot of side quests and ended convorsations quickly because my guy wasnt the 'sit and chat' kind of guy...he was the 'just fucking tell me what to do so i can beat the shit and get your pledge already, fucking asshole'

yea we should make a spoiler thread...and put big fat 'SPOILER SPOILER DONT READ IF YOU HAVENT PLAYED THE GAME, DOUCHEBAG' tags all in the topic

Trumby's picture

Trumby

Just beat it last night. The Archdemon was super easy..I just kept freezing it with CoC. Going to raise the difficulty for my next char. Janet, you only had 40-something hours in game? o.o According to xfire I had 70, though I did listen to most of the conversations and all that. I should check the in game time too. Alistair did the same thing to me, got pissed off because of some choices I made <.<

yori's picture

yori

yea i have 42hrs on my main elf dude...and like 47hrs on my mage...maybe im missing a bunch of shit...or it could be that i try to take care of everything i have while im in a specific area so im not really travelling around so much...i dont know...i kind of get the feeling i missed a lot of dialog/quests

Trumby's picture

Trumby

I only have a little under 60 hours of in game time so I must have been pausing the game, alt tabbing, etc a lot. I did have 98% of the map explored. 55% of the game completed with only 1 character. 1629 conversations initiated..that probably ate up a ton of time :P

I thought there was a side quest % completed stat, but I guess not because I can't find it.

Fap's picture

Fap

**WARNING SPOILERS**

So, finally beat the game. What a satisfying ending. I got Alistair and whats-her-face to get married and rule the kingdom together, I killed the archdemon, and ended up with a statue and a mage tower named after me. Pretty sweet. Now I'm playing through again as a dwarf asshole rogue, and plan on boning Morrigan and pissing off all the nice characters.

yori's picture

yori

i am totally doing that right now too...except instead of morrigan im bwning zevrhan

N8's picture

N8

Dude zev will bone anything.

I love that there's the possibility that your son or spawn of Morrigan with the heart of an old gold will probably be the sequel. Also lolz at convincing Alistar to sleep with Morrigan if you don't (or can't if female).

Ugh double post ftl!

I will add that yeah if you choose to live the ending is very satisfying for a rpg. I liked saying goodbye to all the companions in that hall. Also if you haven't I recommend bringing Oghran along with you on all your travels, he's got the funniest and best dialogue.

Brian's picture

Brian

I'm not really sure how you guys also blew through it so fast. I'm not even 60% done and have already spent over 70 hours playing.

I have on one character had sex with morrigan, lelianna , and zevran. Not to mention I've done every side quest including the "premium content" which grants me to items like the commander's plate and the starfang (best freaking longsword in the game).

I also made two story lines with the elves:

I had the typical curing the wolves, but also went to the extent to convince the wolves to kill off the elves and now they will be going into battle with me at the end against the archdemon. What's interesting is that if you do both paths, and go back to your saved version of the elves you end up still running into werewolves in random encounters.

My favorite spell's to use so far have been :

grease + fireball + blizzard
petrified + stonefist

Also I'm in love with the locust swarm for some reason. It's a highly underrated spell for the fact it jumps from target (max 3)

The only spell I've found to be a bit of a disappoint was the animate dead . Granted I don't have the might spell to cast to make them uber, but something is really lacking from them.

Fap's picture

Fap

I got all the premium content but for some reason it's not working for me. I've heard that the way to fix it is to reinstall the game, which i'm probably too lazy to do. It's just frustrating . . . I go talk to the guy in camp, and he says that he'll put the location on the map, and then it never appears.

Brian's picture

PC or Console. Premium content required me to re-enable it in options. Also I had the collector's edition which required me to select the proper serial number when loading off of steam.

From some video game blog:

The rumored expansion pack for Dragon Age: Origins is reality. Announced today and called Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening, the expansion lets players run around with their existing character or as a new Grey Warden in a new area called Amaranthine where true motivations of the darkspawn can be found out. An increased level cap, new spells, abilities etc (see below for all the contents and story details) are all included as you’d expect from a good expansion.

BioWare has an Awakening page up on the game’s official site, though it was empty at the time of writing. Hopefully it’ll get updated shortly.

Awakening is coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 worldwide on March 16, with a price tag of $39.99.

Designed and written by the same team that brought you Dragon Age: Origins, the Awakening expansion pack offers a brand new area of the world to explore known as Amaranthine, featuring an epic story that will allow players to unravel the secrets of the darkspawn - and their true motivations! Players will face a range of horrific and terrifying creatures including an evolved, intelligent breed of darkspawn and other menacing creatures such as the Inferno Golem and Spectral Dragon. Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening provides exciting new ways for players to customize their heroes and party, including the ability to re-spec their character attributes, allowing even greater customization and replayability. Featuring an increased level cap, new spells, abilities, specializations and items, plus five all-new party members, players can continue their adventures from Dragon Age: Origins, or begin with a brand new character.

Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening, BioWare’s next thread in the Dragon Age: Originstapestry, occurs following the events of Dragon Age: Origins and puts players into the role of a Grey Warden Commander entrusted with rebuilding the order of Grey Wardens. In addition to rebuilding the ranks of the Grey Wardens, you will be tasked with uncovering the mystery of how the darkspawn survive after the slaying of the Archdemon. How players choose to rebuild their order, resolve the conflict with the mysterious “Architect,” and determine the fate of the darkspawn are just some of the many intriguing moral choices that will shape each player’s heroic journey. Players will be able to import their character from Dragon Age: Origins or start out as a new Grey Warden from the neighboring land of Orlais.

I picked up the expansion, then got the best armor in the expansion, then a glitch ate my armor and I didn't have a save to back up far enough to get it back. I'm mad at that game right now.

Chris, I recommend arcane warrior (in case I only said that like 12 times in this thread).

I haven't uh, actually read any of the suggestions in this thread because at the time I was annoyed at the Mario hijacking. I do however have a.....you guessed it, female elf warrior with a bigass 2h sword! I have to admit though that melee isn't really doing a whole lot for me atm. Perhaps it gets better... >_>

If not I may reroll a mage.

Fap do you have any of those bitgamer invites left?

So I just read through this entire thread, trying to skip the spoiler bits when I could see them coming, and I have to admit that I'm trying not to be tempted by rerolling and being OCD about all of the different shit you can do. >_<

so, you only need like 8 or so more alts to see what playing all the classes is like!

Haha...yes, actually now I'm sort of meh about the warrior I made. I like big swords but I'm not enjoying the mechanics a whole lot. I just want to make a mage who has a big sword and can steal and lockpick, what's wrong with that?!

Also has anyone with the torrented copy patched it? I'm wondering if that'll break it? I'd like to get the updates as they fix some issues with mechanics, but I don't want to like, break my copy.

i have a legit base game, and i torrented all the patches and updates and add-ons. everything works fine except for the fact that the awakenings expansion ate my armor, which is a known issue and not isolated to the torrented versions.

I'm actually considering just buying the digital collector's edition, but I'm wondering if I can salvage my characters/saves. I rolled another alt, a dalish rogue who I've decided to use 2H weapons with. I'm having a lot of fun backstabbing with a giant 2H axe!

Took a few fun screenshots at the end of Ostagard, in the tower, my character and Allistair both going in for the kill shot at the same time...

yeah, just save your, uh, save files. the reinstall should redetect them if you put them in the folder they should be in.

Rogues don't use two handed weapons. This game is a farce!

your mom's a farce . . . in my pants?

i didn't know where that was going from the beginning.

To be fair, a two handed sword would be a very good means of "convincing" someone to give you their money...and it may work well when opening chests! Definitely a set-back when it comes to subtly and stealth--as seen in Berserk.

How are you going to take the money from them?

Well now I'm picturing the back-stab animation . . .

Actually that's kind of how the backstab animation looks when you have a 2H weapon equipped......coincidence?!!?

Sooo, I'm at 41 hours played and only 25% of the way through the game. This effer is LONG. If you know what I mean.

I think my first playthrough took me 70 something hours. Including every DLC

About 20 hours or so into my 2nd playthrough and I have only done redcliffe and a couple DLC things.

I picked up this game recently (late to the party I know!) but it's mad fun. I rolled a warrior and have been tanking. Threat mechanics and combat both feel super clunky to me,

One thing that bothers me are that you have to do really awful plot things to unlock certain specializations. The plot itself, though, is really good and really intricate.

Arcane warrior mages sound pretty broken.

Yea the first time I tried tanking in DA I was still in WoW tanking mode and it isn't really even remotely similar other than the fact that you have this person taking damage and someone healing him while everyone else dpses.

Otherwise, fun! I need to finish it.
