great movie or greatest movie?

Great, but greatest is up for debate--what's is being compared to? Personal or overall greatness values? Although, I'd be up for prescribing for greatest.

I liked Avatar a lot. I've seen it twice and will probably see it again before it's out of theaters (though that could be awhile given it's popularity). I'm not sure I'd call it the greatest movie ever, but it is certainly the best cg I've ever seen. They also worked wonders with the stereoscopic effect.

I think Avatar could arguably be the greatest movie ever if not for the fact that the plot was entirely predictable. That's not to say it wasn't a great plot, because it was, and Cameron wrapped up all of the ends nice and neatly. I think though that he had his concept which he wanted to explore without worrying about major plot twists, turning his eye-candy-fest into a holy-shit-I-didn't-see-that-coming type of film. Once you start doing that you open up the plot to interpretation and people start finding holes and bad-mouthing it.

yeah, i thought it was pretty predictable, but for some reason i found it still immensely satisfying. the plot was so classic (dances with wolves) that it didn't matter that I knew what was coming next. it was like one huge pay off after another the whole way through. cameron said that if it did well then he had a trilogy planned, so holy shit more avatar is coming one day XD

My only sadness comes from personal optimism and encounters with other audience members. Optimistically I though there would be a greater number of rebellious humans and ones unwilling to follow the General's orders. As for one elderly man who my dad chatted to in the line (we had both already seen it once, as least I think he saw it) where the old man grunted, said "Eh, it's a tree-hugger film. I don't want to go live in any trees." My dad responded that he was himself a tree-hugger, with pride, and I restrained trying to inject a finger into his mind to find the elderly person's blockage and minimal interpretation of the film. >;(

The only thing I didn't like about Avatar was just how predictable the story was, exactly as Chris said. I knew how the story would end as soon as he started getting seriously involved with the Na'vi. Still a very good movie though. Definitely one you have to see in 3d

Hmm...there was about a 20% chance the military was going to be able to wipe out the tree and the Na'vi. My mind did go off on what sort of ending it would have if they had lost, but I guess it would have been a bit too pessimistic?

Yeah, I was thinking that it would be cool to have some sort of twist, but (minor SPOILER) I didn't think they could really have time to suffer any major setbacks and still finish up the movie in a reasonable time, so I figured it would be straightforward. The visuals, however, were incredible.
