Path of Exile

Just read a blurb from CAD about Path of Exile.

I'm not ready to jump back into ARPGs yet (didn't even finish TL2) but this looks interesting.

Awesome! My dad has been looking for a new ARPG, and I think this one fits his click-furiously style (or behavior)!

Thanks! :D

That--that skill tree is a thing of beauty!

Cool! Let me know how he likes it. I think Foster is also going to try the open beta.

Indeed I have. After a couple hours here are my first impressions. First and foremost, its an ARPG, if you liked D3 (at all) you'll like this. Hordes of mobs, lots of loot, familiar HP/mana/XP bars, scrolls of ID and town portal - the heart is identical. One difference is the skills. Skills come from gems, so when you finish a quest they'll offer you a choice of gems which you put in weapon/armor sockets, and you can swap them around at will. This means your barbarian can fire lightning bolts and frost novas and whatnot. Another oddity: there's no gold. You barter scrolls and upgrade stones and stuff for gear. I find that part really strange and makes inventory management more cumbersome. Especially when you can't TP at will (because scrolls of TP double as money). And then there's the skill tree, holy shit the skill tree, its by FAR the most massive skill tree in the history of video games [citation needed]. Take every skill tree from WoW, add put them all together, and its still not as big as this sucker. Fortunately you don't have to make too many choices early on and can sort of wind your way through. I hope that doesn't fuck me up later on.

Bottom line: I'm calling it Diablo 4

Here's a good startup guide:

My dad has been enjoying the game! The skill tree may be a bit complicated for him, but I think he's figuring it out.

I tried a couple of the classes this afternoon before the servers went down. As previously mentioned, it's very Diablo-esque feeling. It also feels a bit like old school Fallout, and maybe a little like Titan Quest too. It's dark and has atmospheric music.

I'm not sure if the starting stats have much influence on overall gameplay but they do seem to dictate what you can use as far as armor/weapons early on. Need to putz around a bit more and see how things go...
